Face-to-face interactions can make or break your chances at a job. Think about it – usually you either apply for a job in person, go in for an interview, or are asked to meet with your potential future boss before you’re even considered for the position. While technology is moving our world toward cyber-orientation, the candidates who put in the extra effort to show their face are still the ones that stand out the most to employers.
Handshake has the tools to help you do just that. On the left hand side of your homepage, the second section of the sidebar is labeled attend. This section is full of opportunities both on and off campus that will help you interact with possible future employers as well as grow your network.
The first button under this tab, Events, will bring you to a page full of career related opportunities endorsed by Concordia. The events will be listed chronologically, and from the main page you will be able to see the time and date, the location, and how many students have already registered. On the right hand side of this page is located a list of upcoming events, appointments, career fairs, or interviews that you might have signed up for. For each event, you can select to view the details, which will open a page with more extensive information on the purpose of the event. You will also have the option of adding a comment or asking a question, as well as following the event or officially joining it.
The second button under the Attend Tab is Fairs. This page is dedicated to job, internship, or career fairs, which are events where a large number of employers or organizations gather to meet with interested job-seekers. The search options on the left side of this page allow you to narrow your search or look for fairs in a specific location or on specific days. From this page, you can select a fair and find out more information on the specifics, contact the liaison, as well as chose to join or follow the fair.
The final button, Interviews, lists any on campus interviews happening at Concordia. This page, similar to the Fair page, allows you to change the search parameters in order refine the options visible. Clicking on an interview will bring you to a page with more details, such as the timeline leading up to the interview, the schedule for the interview, and a link to the employer’s page on Handshake.
Attending events, fairs, and interviews will give you a chance to meet face to face with those who are already rooted in their careers. Even if the event or fair isn’t geared toward your major or area of study, they are still great opportunities to learn about professional interactions, networking, and are highly suggested for everyone to attend. You can only benefit from the experience!
