Welcome back Cobbers! The Career Center is excited that campus is busy and bustling again. As we head into this new year we’re excited to keep working on Handshake with all of you. Career Peer Nicky will be writing a weekly article on our favorite online tool, Handshake. We will be going in depth on everything from editing your homepage to submitting a hire.
Let’s start off with the basics – the homepage.
Once you’ve used your Concordia login to get into Handshake, you’ll be taken to your home page. This is where Handshake will give you all of the information that it thinks you will want to see, so it’s important to know how to edit it.
In the upper left-hand corner will be a button asking you to personalize your Handshake. Once you’ve clicked on it you’ll be brought to a page with a set of clarifying questions. Answer as many as you can and keep in mind that the more specific you are the better Handshake will be able to meet your needs.
Once you’ve filled out the questionnaire, Handshake will use that information to tailor the jobs and opportunities that appear on your homepage.
Aside from the personalized buttons, there are a number of other features on your homepage. On the far right and toward the top, you will find a list of upcoming events. These are events specifically promoted or held by Concordia. They might include career and internship fairs, employers coming to campus, or any other number of opportunities. While some of these events might be geared toward a specific major or area of interest; they are all great opportunities to practice presenting your resume and networking.
Beneath the events is a list of recommended resources. These are articles and information that the Career Center professional staff put together to help you improve you career game. While only a few will be listed on your homepage, the view more button will bring you to a more comprehensive list selection including everything from how to brand yourself to using strong action verbs in your resume.
On the far left-hand side of the home page is a banner with a number of tabs under the categories of explore, attend, plan, engage, and other. A number of tabs will be touched on throughout the rest of this series.
