How to Handshake

I’m sure by now that you’ve all been preached at about all of Handshake’s features , had a Career Center employee shove a Handshake card at you, or been asked to sit in our bright yellow Handshake hand (Bruce Viewig did it – you should too!). Well, if any of you are still wondering just what Handshake is or how to make the most of it, keep reading! In this article I’ll cover some of the most commonly asked Handshake related questions. What is Handshake?

Handshake is a platform created specifically for college students looking to enter the workforce. It is replacing our former platform, Careerlink. It can be used to search for jobs and internships, interact with employers, make appointments with the Career Center, and find a vast amount of resources for topics such as resume building and interview tips. You can also use Handshake to register for events such as career fairs and informational sessions

How do I make a profile and what should I include in it?

It’s as easy as going to www.concordia.joinhandshake.com and entering your Concordia login credentials. Once you are logged in, you can select the “View my Profile” button on the left-hand side. From there you can add information such as previous work experience, extracurricular, and education background. It’s important to keep your profile up to date as it is visible to employers. From this page you can also upload documents such as a resume or cover letter. It’s important to fill out the profile as much as you can since Handshake will send you job and internship opportunities based on the information that you provide it.

How do I search for jobs?

As stated earlier, Handshake will send you opportunities based on the information that you provide. You can update your job preferences by changing them through user settings in the upper right-hand corner of the page. You can also search for jobs manually through the “Jobs” button under the Explore section on the left-hand side of the page. You will have the option to filter jobs based on the criteria as well. If you find a job or employer that you are particularly interested in then you can save that search as well.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment with the Career Center you click on the “Appointments” button under the Plan section on the left-hand side of the page. Follow the onscreen instructions by selecting a type of appointment, followed by who the appointment will be with. Make sure that you are scheduling your appointment with the right Program Manager. If you are unsure about who your Program Manager is, then check the Career Center website or email us at careerpeers@cord.edu.

How do I control my newsfeed?

You Handshake newsfeed functions similarly to any other social media newsfeed.Handshake will update what it shows you based on your profile, the employers and jobs that you follow, as well as the events that you attend.
